Minor White: The Eye that Shapes

INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR PETER BUNNELL TO PHOTOGRAPHER MAGGIE SMITH

BUNNELL, Peter. Minor White: The Eye that Shapes. Boston, Toronto, London: The Art Museum, Princeton University (Bulfinch Press/Little Brown), 1989. Oblong folio, original gray cloth, original dust jacket. $1200.

First edition, presentation association copy warmly inscribed by the author to esteemed photographer Maggie Smith on the half title: “For Maggie Smith—to remember a day at Princeton looking at your work. Peter Bunnell. May 14, 1998.”

Minor White, one of the greatest American photographers of the 20th century, was also known as one of the greatest teachers of the medium, and was on the faculty at MIT and RIT for decades. His influence comes as much from his theoretical writings and teaching as they do from his photographs, which are infused with a spiritual sense of wonder at the natural world. This volume accompanied a major retrospective of his work at MOMA. Author Peter Bunnell was a student of White's. Maggie Smith was the partner of Eugene Smith, and an esteemed writer and photographer in her own right, whose work appeared in the renowned Family of Man exhibit, among other places.

A fine copy.
