Imaginations and Reveries
Imaginations and Reveries

A.E. [RUSSELL, George]. Imaginations and Reveries. Dublin and London: Maunsel, 1915. Octavo, original blue cloth, uncut. $1500.

First edition, inscribed in the year of publication, "For Mrs Law, with best wishes from AE, Christmas, 1915."

The Irish writer George Russell, who published under the name "A.E.," was a central figure in the group of Irish writers interested in mysticism and Theosophy in the early 20th century, which included his friend W.B. Yeats. Imaginations and Reveries is a collection of 24 essays and articles. Without scarce dust jacket. The recipient of this copy, Lota Law, was the wife of Hugh Alexander Law, an Irish nationalist politician, and the owner of Marble Hill, the house in Donegal where A.E. visited on a number of occasions. He was known to visit in part in order to hunt for fairies in the woods; his belief in the existence of fairies, while novel today, "was almost a political and cultural necessity" for Irish writers and nationalists of the time (Carole G. Silver).

Interior clean, cloth with some rubbing and wear, boards bowed. A very good inscribed copy.
