A HISTORY OF MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE GRANDSON OF MOREHOUSE PRESIDENT JOHN HOPE

JONES, Edward A. A Candle in the Dark. A History of Morehouse College. Valley Forge, Pennsylvania: Judson, 1967. Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. $1500.

First edition of this history of Morehouse College, inscribed to the grandson of John Hope, the most influential of Morehouse's presidents, "To—Richard Oliver Hope, a faithful former student and fellow alumnus, and grand-son of Morehouse College's illustrious fourth President, Dr. John Hope; with pleasant memories and best wishes. Edw. A. Jones. 3-14-68."

The historically black Morehouse college in Atlanta has had an outsized influence on American history, serving as, among other things, one of the crucibles of the civil rights movement, counting both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Julian Bond among its graduates. As noted in the inscription itself, this copy is inscribed to Richard Hope, grandson of John Hope, the highly influential president of Morehouse University from 1906 to 1936. John Hope is discussed extensively in this work, with an entire chapter dedicated to his presidency. With the 1981 funeral program for the author laid in.
