"LIFE NEVER GIVES US WHAT WE WANT AT THE MOMENT THAT WE CONSIDER APPROPRIATE"

FORSTER, E.M. A Passage to India. London: Edward Arnold, 1924. Octavo, original red cloth. $1600.

First edition of Forster’s last novel.

E.M. Forster's 1921 return trip to India "had the effect of releasing what was to be judged his masterpiece, A Passage to India" (DNB). Andre Gide praised Forster's last novel as "a miracle of intelligence, tact, irony, prudence and ability" (Connolly, Modern Movement 45). Basis for David Lean's Oscar-nominated 1984 film of the same name. Without scarce original dust jacket. Three pages of advertisements at rear. Kirkpatrick A10.

Interior fine, with none of the usual foxing; original cloth with only slight rubbing, faintest wear to spine ends. A near-fine copy.
