Sword in the Stone

“ONE OF THE FINEST CHILDREN’S FANTASIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY”

WHITE, T(erence) H(anbury). The Sword in the Stone. London: Collins, 1938. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of the original version of White’s playful—and profound—recounting of King Arthur’s boyhood, illustrated with numerous linecuts by the author.

White drew inspiration from both Malory’s Morte d’Arthur and his own experiences as a schoolmaster when creating this charming story of the young, future king and Merlyn, his magical tutor. “The characterizations are exceptionally fine and the story has a perfect blend of humor and sentimentality” (Anatomy of Wonder 5-318). “Few would deny its romance and humanity” (An English Library, 56). Although White substantially revised the book for its 1958 inclusion in The Once and Future King, this original version remains “one of the finest children’s fantasies of the 20th century” (Clute & Grant, 1010-11). It also served as the basis for the acclaimed 1963 Walt Disney animated feature. See Cawthorn & Moorcock, Fantasy 100 Best 54; Parker, 353.

Faintest offsetting from dust jacket design to cloth. Dust jacket with a few minor chips to spine edges. A bright beautiful copy in about-fine condition.
