THE VALKS’ WONDERFUL LARGE HAND-COLORED WORLD MAP, WITH BEAUTIFUL ALLEGORICAL ENGRAVINGS OF THE FOUR SEASONS, CIRCA 1700
VALK, Gerard and Leonard. Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accurata Tabula. [Amsterdam]: Auct. G. et L. Valk (Gerard Valck [sic]), circa 1700. Original hand-colored copper-engraved map (plate mark measures 23 by 19 inches); framed (entire piece measures 33 by 29-1/2 inches).
Magnificent large hand-colored double-hemisphere world map, based largely on Jaillot’s map of 1674, with two polar insets and elaborately engraved allegorical borders depicting the four seasons, handsomely framed.
Brother-in-laws Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk began as cartographic publishers upon the death of Johannes Jansson’s son-in-law, Johannes van Waesberge, in 1681. In 1694 they acquired at auction the copperplates for Jansson’s Novus Atlas (1646), which had last been used in van Waesberge’s two-volume Atlas Contractus (1666). In 1708 the new owners used the Jansson plates to produce a new edition of the Atlas Contractus. Around 1714 Gerard Valk and his son Leonard issued their monumental six-volume Nova Totius Geographica Telluris Projecto, with its 508 large double-page maps, many produced from the Jansson plates. For the World Map, however, they abandoned the Jansson version in favor of this striking double-hemisphere map of the world, derived from Johannes Bleau’s famous wall map of 1648. The Valks also relied heavily on Alexis-Hubert Jaillot’s map of 1674, which in turn is based on the Sansons’ world map of 1669 (see Shirley 462). In this Valks map, Greenland is connected to North America, California is an island with “Fretum Aniani” at the top, all five Great Lakes are depicted and Quebec is noted in the east. The west contains the names of several reported Spanish settlements. Part of Austraila is firmly attached to New Guinea, and only a stretch of New Zealand coastline is shown. The New Holland coastline is also incomplete. The wonderful surrounding border illustrates the four seasons—“joyous spring, industrious summer, bucolic autumn and icy winter” (Shirley). Shirley, World 531, version 5.
Minor separation and repair at centerfold, some expert edge repairs. A very desirable, crisp impression, beautifully hand-colored and handsomely framed.
