Bobwhite Quail

DETAILED 1931 REPORT ON THE STATUS OF BOBWHITE QUAILS, RE-ISSUED IN 1942

STODDARD, Herbert L. The Bobwhite Quail: Its Habits, Preservation and Increase. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1942. Thick quarto, original brown cloth gilt.

Second edition of this ground-breaking government report on methods for “insuring in perpetuity an abundance of bobwhites and the enjoyment of the sport of quail hunting,” with 69 photographic plates of quail habits and habitats and 32 in-text diagrams and maps.

“The bobwhite holds first rank among game birds of the country, and as it is an important ally of the farmer and has a strong hold on our affections for aesthetic reasons, there is a real demand for exact, detailed, and dependable knowledge of its life history and of the factors limiting its increase.” This is the 1942 re-issue of the Department of Agriculture’s “thorough investigations,” conducted from 1924 to 1929, on the status of bobwhite quails and “other upland game birds as well,” first published in 1931.

A fine copy.
