Mormon Country

“FOR ALL ITS HOMEY DOMESTICITY AND ITS TRADITION OF LABORIOUS PIETY, IT IS A COUNTRY THAT BREEDS THE IMPOSSIBLES”

STEGNER, Wallace. Mormon Country. New York: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, (1942). Octavo, original burgundy cloth, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of Stegner’s history of the Mormon settlement of Utah and the land extending just beyond its borders.

This work concentrates on the founding of Mormon country in the American West. It begins with the Mormon journey west under the leadership of Brigham Young and moves forward through the process of transforming Utah and environs including the founding of the thriving metropolis of Salt Lake City. Stegner excels at “presenting the local scene and its folkways” (Hart, 720). “All of his writings are informed by a deep sense of the American experience and the potential, which he termed ‘the geography of promise,’ that the West symbolizes” (Kuiper, 1064). Armorial bookplate of Rolland Comstock, an avid collector of modern first editions. At the time of his tragic and still unsolved murder, he reportedly owned more than 50,000 books. Contemporary pencil owner signature on half title.

Book fine, price-clipped dust jacket with minor soiling and only light wear to extremities and single tape repair to verso. A near-fine copy.
