THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, ILLUSTRATED BY EVERETT SHINN
(SHINN, Everett) MOORE, Clement C. The Night Before Christmas. Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto: John C. Winston, (1942). Slim quarto, original half blue cloth, illustrated paper boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.
Later edition of the perennial Yuletide poem, lushly illustrated by noted “Ashcan School” painter Everett Shinn with ten double-page illustrations (five in color) and double-page title page, pictorial endpapers and illustrated dust jacket, all in color.
“A painter, illustrator and muralist best known for his theatrical and urban subjects,” Shinn “worked as an illustrator/reporter for several newspapers and magazines in Philadelphia and New York… Around 1900, Shinn’s interest turned to painting, and he became associated with the group of artists known as the Ashcan School,” who emphasized stark depictions of everyday city life (Smithsonian Institution). While Shinn’s work in this volume ventures far from the Ashcan School’s usual concerns, it perfectly captures the whimsy and joy in Moore’s classic (first published in 1823). “With The Night Before Christmas Everett Shinn puts a new feather in an already well-feathered cap.”
Book fine, near-fine dust jacket with a few short closed tears. A lovely copy.
