Folio (13 by 17-1/2 inches), contemporary full red crushed morocco gilt, covers elaborately gilt-decorated with inlaid morocco-gilt coats of arms, raised bands, gilt-decorated endpapers.

First edition of this dazzling reproduction of one of the most striking illuminated manuscripts of the 14th century, the laws of the chivalric order “du Saint-Esprit au Droit Desir,” reproducing the manuscript in brilliant color on 17 vivid chromolithographic plates heightened with gilt. Beautifully bound by Gruel.

Louis de Tarente founded the chivalric order Saint-Esprit au Droit Desir (or, Ordre du Noeud) in Naples in 1352 to consolidate his power as the newly installed King of Naples and Sicily. This exquisitely printed facsimile includes an essay on the painting of miniatures and a transcript of the French text, both by Horace de Viel-Castel, director of the Louvre until 1863. Two minor marginal marks to Plate I, not affecting image. A lovely volume in fine condition, beautifully bound.
