Road to Serfdom

“ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS OF OUR GENERATION”: SCARCE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF HAYEK’S THE ROAD TO SERFDOM, ASSOCIATION COPY

HAYEK, Friedrich A. The Road to Serfdom. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, (1944). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First American edition of Hayek’s landmark work, one of only 2000 copies of the first printing, in scarce original dust jacket. The copy of renowned labor journalist Benjamin Stolberg, with his owner signature dated the year of publication.

“Hayek has written one of the most important books of our generation. It restates for our time the issue between liberty and authority with the power and rigor of reasoning that John Stuart Mill stated… in his great essay, ‘On Liberty” (Hazlitt, 82). Hayek’s analysis of the link between planning and totalitarianism and his moral defense of capitalism caused a sensation when it was published. Because of its enduring influence, The Road to Serfdom is considered “a major event in the intellectual history of the United States” (Gottfried, 10). In the introduction to this American edition, John Chamberlain notes that Hayek may be “more ‘American’ than the modern Americans.” Preceded by the English first edition of the same year. This copy bears the owner signature of Benjamin Stolberg, dated “Sept 26/1944 NYC.” Stolberg was a prominent author and journalist focusing on labor issues. While he wrote primarily for the New York Evening Post, New York Times, and the New York Herald, he was also widely syndicated and had a visible presence as a freelance writer in magazines. A devoted liberal, he championed the causes of labor between the World Wars and delved into both economics and socialism. He kept up extensive personal and professional correspondence with notable figures on both the left and right such as Herbert Hoover, Ayn Rand, Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, and Leon Trotsky (on whose Commission of Inquiry he served investigating the Moscow Trials). Extensive pencil annotations in a separate hand.

Book fine, scarce and fragile dust jacket extremely good with only a few small chips and mild toning to spine. A scarce, near-fine copy with an outstanding association.
