ORIGINAL KATE GREENAWAY AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, WITH A LOVELY ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR DRAWING

GREENAWAY, Kate. Autograph letter to Frederick Locker-Lampson, signed, with an original watercolor drawing. Hempstead, December 24, 1888. Single sheet of laid paper, folded once, measuring 4 by 6 inches folded.

Original autograph letter to friend and collaborator Frederick Locker-Lampson, reading, “Just a line to wish a Happy New Year—though I know you dislike Christmas as much as I do—everything put out by it. Our morning’s letters came at past 12 this morning and now it lasts for days. I really do dislike it—all the same I wish you a Happy New Year. Yours sincerely, Kate Greenaway.” With a charming original pencil and watercolor drawing of “Summer,” a variation of the design she used on her 1881 Christmas card for Marcus Ward & Company.

“In the portrayal of childhood, no Victorian artist could combine charm, beauty and gentleness with such style as Kate Greenaway, the undisputed queen of nursery books” (Dalby, 26). This wonderfully delicate Greenaway watercolor of a little girl in pink frock, black bonnet and ruffled shawl, holding a basket of red roses, is executed with characteristic fine detail and subtle coloration. The recipient, poet Frederick Locker-Lampson, was originally hired by Greenaway’s publisher, George Routledge, to edit her Under the Window (1878), and shortly afterwards presented himself unannounced at her studio door. “His store of charm and sophistication immediately dazzled Kate” (Engen, 55). He became Greenaway’s friend, editor and business advisor over the next 17 years, correcting her verses and creating opportunities for the furtherance of her career. Their mutual distaste for the commercialism of Christmas (as evidenced by this letter), however, did not prevent them from designing and producing numerous Christmas greeting cards— she providing the illustrations; he the verses.

Fine condition. A very desirable original drawing with splendid literary association.
