EISENHOWER, Dwight D. Crusade in Europe. Garden City: Doubleday, 1948. Thick octavo, original tan linen, cartographic endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut, original acetate, original slipcase. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

Signed limited first edition, number 919 of 1426 copies, signed by Eisenhower at the bottom of his D-Day message to Allied troops, additionally inscribed on the limitation page: "For Bob Lovett, with lasting appreciation of wise counsel throughout World War II, and with best wishes and warm regards from his devoted friend, Ike Eisenhower." Lovett was the Undersecretary of War and responsible for aircraft production in the United States during World War II.

Eisenhower's memoir provides an important and unique perspective on the difficult command-level decisions that decided the outcome of World War II. Included are numerous battlefield and theater maps (a number in color), as well as photographic illustrations selected by Edward Steichen. Lovett would go on to serve as President Truman's Secretary of Defense. With typed letter signed from Presidential adviser Clark M. Clifford regarding the connection between Eisenhower and Lovett laid in.

Bit of rubbing to slipcase, often not present at all; remnants of tape to acetate. Front inner hinge expertly reinforced, cloth clean and fine.
