Oliver Twist

“PERHAPS THE MOST WIDELY KNOWN IMAGE DICKENS EVER CREATED”

DICKENS, Charles. Oliver Twist. London: Richard Bentley, 1839. Three volumes. Small octavo, early 20th-century full tan calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red and blue morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges.

Second edition, published one year after the first, of Dickens’ second novel, the famous tale of the orphan Twist, illustrated with 24 etchings by George Cruikshank, handsomely bound by Nutt.

Dickens’ second novel is “distinguished by trenchant social satire and vivid evocation of criminal low-life, and, in the mythically evocative depiction of Oliver asking for more, containing perhaps the most widely known image Dickens ever created” (Schlicke, 437). First published serially from 1837-39 and in book form in 1838. Gimbel A28.

Scattered light foxing and staining to text and plates. A very handsomely bound copy.
