“THE FIRST TO REVEAL THE RICHNESS OF EGYPTIAN ART TO EUROPE”: DENON’S EGYPT, WITH 147 FINE ENGRAVED FOLIO PLATES

(EGYPT) DENON, Baron Dominique Vivant. Tavole Spettanti al Viaggio nel Basso ed Alto Egitto, Illustrato. Florence: Giuseppe Tofani, 1808. Thick atlas folio (15 by 21-1/2 inches), contemporary three-quarter calf gilt rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, renewed spine label, marbled boards, renewed endpapers.

First edition in Italian of Denon’s collection of 147 lovely engraved plates, including 71 aquatints with a sepia wash, and three double-page maps.

Denon “was one of the train of artists and literary and scientific men who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte to Egypt, where he wielded alternately the pen and the sword, it is said with equal dexterity. His great work on the Egyptian expedition, Voyage de la Haute et Basse Egypte, the numerous drawings for which were made by himself, is alone sufficient to immortalize his name. Napoleon was warmly attached to him, made him Director-General of the Museums, and consulted with him on all matters connected with the Fine Arts” (Bryan’s Dictionary). After accompanying Napoleon to Egypt in 1798, Denon returned to France with the first drawings of views and monuments along the Nile, “having worked in extremely difficult circumstances during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign” (Blackmer). Included are three large double-page maps, scenic views, battle scenes, monuments, antiquities, hieroglyphics, plans and spectacular plates of the pyramids and sphinx. Text in Italian. Denon’s full account was originally published in 1802 in French, accompanied by 141 plates, and then the following year in English, with 61 plates. Cicognara 2520. See Blackmer 471.

Faint marginal dampstain to lower corner of last few plates only, not affecting images. Plates generally quite clean and crisp. Light edge-wear to contemporary calf binding. A very good copy. Quite scarce.
