"HAVE A BITCHIN' SUMMER!": FIRST EDITION OF FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, INSCRIBED BY CAMERON CROWE

CROWE, Cameron. Fast Times at Ridgemont High. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1981). Octavo, original half tan cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of writer/director Crowe’s scarce first book, boldly inscribed by him in blue felt pen on the colophon page, "2011, Have a bitchin' summer! Cameron Crowe," adapted to the screen in 1982 with his debut as a screenwriter, also featuring a brilliant early performance by Sean Penn and praised by the American Film Institute as one of "America’s funniest movies."

Already a seasoned journalist for Rolling Stone at the age of 22, Cameron Crowe posed for a year as a high school student at Clairemont High School in California (the name was changed for the book and movie to protect the innocent, along with the not-so-innocent), gathering material for Fast Times at Ridgemont High. For Crowe, his life and work have “always been about rock and roll… starting with his precocious stint as a teenage journalist with Rolling Stone magazine in the 70s.” With Fast Times and his debut screenplay adaptation for the 1982 film, through to his directorial debut in Say Anything (1989), and films such as Jerry Maguire (1996) and Almost Famous (2000), Crowe captures the way a generation grew up with rock and roll. The 1982 film adaptation contains especially memorable early performances by Sean Penn, Nicholas Cage, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forrest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz and others. The American Film Institute praised Fast Times as one of “America’s funniest movies” and the film was added to the National Film Registry in 2005.

A fine inscribed copy.
