“ONE OF THE GREAT CHILDREN’S NOVELS OF ALL TIME”: DELUXE GIFT ISSUE OF THE SECRET GARDEN, ILLUSTRATED WITH FIVE COLOR PLATES

BURNETT, Frances Hodgson. The Secret Garden. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, (1911). Octavo, original black-, gold- and rose-decorated green cloth, pictorial endpapers, mounted cover illustration.

Deluxe illustrated “gift issue” of “one of the greatest children’s novels of all time,” beautifully illustrated by Maria Kirk with five mounted color plates and a mounted color cover illustration.

Burnett began writing her beloved tale of nature’s redemptive power “in 1909, while laying out a garden at a new home she was building on Long Island… The Secret Garden, her best and most enduring work… never ceases to gain new admirers, and has been called… ‘the most satisfying children’s book” (Carpenter & Prichard, 89). “One of the great children’s novels of all time” (Zipes et al., 2185). The first edition was issued in August 1911; this deluxe issue (not listed in BAL) was printed shortly after in a larger format with five beautiful color tipped-in plates. See: BAL 2115; An English Library, 93.

Plates and text clean and fine, cloth with minimal rubbing and slight spotting to front board. A beautiful copy.
