Letters to Paula

INSCRIBED IN HEBREW BY DAVID BEN-GURION: SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF LETTERS TO PAULA

BEN-GURION, David. Michtavim el Paula vael hayeladim (Letters to Paula and the Children). (Tel Aviv): Am Oved, (1968). Octavo, original paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of Ben-Gurion’s letters to his wife Paula and his family, inscribed in Hebrew by Ben-Gurion in the year of publication, shortly after his wife’s death. Text entirely in Hebrew, printed in Tel Aviv.

Drawn largely from letters written between the world wars, during the struggle to create a Jewish state, the letters of Israel’s first Prime Minister to his family reveal David Ben-Gurion to be “an absolutely dedicated politician… a visionary who never loses sight of his aim… The two outstanding issues in the letters are internal politics-mainly within the framework of the Zionist Organization-and ‘foreign policy,’ i.e. the struggle with the British” (Jerusalem Post). The death of his wife Paula in 1964 was “a shock from which Ben-Gurion never recovered” (Time).

Text fine, repair to spine head of near-fine book; slight edge-wear, some chipping and closed tears with one tape repair to scarce original dust jacket.
