“GUARD AGAINST SMOOTH TONGUES…”: EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE EARLY PHILADELPHIA SPELLER, 1794, IN ORIGINAL BOARDS

(AMERICANA) (CHILDREN) BARRY, John. The Philadelphia Spelling Book, Arranged upon a Plan Entirely New, Adapted to the Capacities of Children. Philadelphia: Jones, Hoff & Derrick, 1794. Small octavo, original half brown sheep, light blue-green paper-covered boards. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

Second edition of this improved speller by the “Master of the Free School of the Protestant Episcopal Church,” in original blue-green paper boards. Very scarce— no copies cited in standard bibliographies.

Designed as "an immediate improvement in spelling and reading the English language, the whole being recommended by several eminent teachers in the instruction of youth," Barry's new speller differs from its predecessors in his recognition that "children are naturally fond of change even in their amusements… and how acceptable variety is to them in their puerile recreations… Great pains have been taken in arranging the lessons gradually, as the understanding and judgment of the children seemed to increase." First published in 1790, Barry's Philadelphia Spelling Book was endorsed as "tending more to facilitate spelling and reading than any book of the kind." Evans 26622 (publisher erroneous). Not listed in NUC or WorldCat. Inscribed on the flyleaf, "Mary Spery [sic]— her Book, 1797." Gift inscription on free endpaper.

Faint scattered foxing, front board of original binding worn but intact, paper rubbed. Very scarce.
