LAFENESTRE, Georges, editor. The Great Masters in the Louvre. London and Paris: Goupil, 1899-1900. Two volumes in four. Elephant folio (volumes measure 16 by 21-1/2 inches, contemporary three-quarter dark red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.
First edition, limited to only 25 numbered copies reserved for “England and the British Empire.” Profusely illustrated with hundreds of plates and in-text illustrations, many colored or tinted, including fine color plates window-mounted on thick paper.
The introduction by editor Georges Lafenestre offers a brief critical history of the Louvre and its magnificent holdings. The books are divided chronologically and by national schools, with essays by various scholars. The large and finely printed plates were prepared using several processes, including “watercolor facsimiles” (mounted on thick paper in window mounts), photogravure and typogravure, indexed at the rear of Volumes II and IV.
