On Collecting

Format

One of the mysteries encountered by the beginning collector is a series of abbreviations used to describe a book’s size: 4to, 8vo, 12mo, etc. Words such as folio, quarto, octavo and duodecimo began to regularly appear in an emerging book trade during the sixteenth century. Folio is Latin for leaf, quarto means one-quarter or fourth, and octavo means one-eighth or eighth.
