Dioecesis Africana (Barbary Coast)

SPLENDID COLOR-OUTLINED MAP OF THE BARBARY COAST OF NORTH AFRICA, CIRCA 1700

(AFRICA). Dioecesis Africana. FROM: Unidentified Atlas, Plate 149. No place: no publisher, circa 1700. Original copper-engraved, hand-colored map, measuring 18 by 15 inches. $650.

Original color-outlined map of the Barbary Coast, with wonderfully illustrated title-piece of lions, natives, and a lizard.

Early delineation of the Barbary Coast, bordered by Mauritania Tingitana, Mauritania Caesariensis, Itania Sitiensis, and Tripolitana—modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunis, and Libya. “Maps of the 18th century still maintain a decorative quality, though their ornamental side is usually confined to the title-piece and scale of miles” (Tooley). With interior vignettes of a camel, lion and pair of antelopes. See Tooley, Maps and Mapmakers, 96-102.

Boldly hand-colored, only lightly soiled. Near-fine condition.
