“IT IS NOT THE COUNTRY BUT WHAT YOU CARRY TO IT THAT MAKES AN ARTIST”: ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE OF ANDREW WYETH’S 1966-67 TOURING EXHIBITION

WYETH, Andrew. Andrew Wyeth. Temperas. Watercolors. Dry Brush. Drawings. 1938 into 1966. (New York: Abercrombie & Fitch, 1966). Quarto, original stiff pictorial paper wrappers.

First edition, illustrated with 56 reproductions of Wyeth’s work (16 in color).

This catalogue illustrates an exhibition of Wyeth's work that premiered at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in October 1966 before traveling to Baltimore, New York and Chicago. "With characteristic loyalty," writes the Academy's director, Joseph T. Fraser, Jr., in his foreword, "Wyeth, whose work enjoys universal acclaim, chose his home state as the locale for the original showing of his most significant exhibition" to that time. Includes such works as "Children's Doctor," "The Trodden Weed," "Albert's Son" and the iconic "Christina's World." With vintage engraved invitation to a black tie reception at the Academy in Wyeth's honor. The invitation is addressed to "Mrs. Sargent," likely Wyeth's aunt, Elizabeth Bockius Sargent, who lived in Lancaster County and whom Wyeth regularly visited.

Interior generally clean, wrappers lightly rubbed and soiled with minor closed tear to lower edge of front wrapper. Near-fine condition.
