FIRST EDITION OF RADICAL CHIC & MAU-MAUING THE FLAK CATCHERS, BOLDLY SIGNED BY TOM WOLFE

WOLFE, Tom. Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, (1970). Octavo, original beige cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, boldly signed on the half title by Tom Wolfe with his characteristic flourishes.

This book is composed of two of Wolfe's articles focusing on black rage and white guilt at the height of the Civil Rights movement. "These Radical Chic Evenings," first published in June 1970 in New York magazine, concerns a gathering that Leonard Bernstein held for the Black Panther Party. The second piece, "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers," has to do with the response of San Francisco's minority community to the city's poverty programs. "Tom Wolfe understands the human animal like no sociologist around. He tweaks his reader's every buried thought and prejudice. He sees through everything. He is as original and outrageous as ever" (New York Times). "First printing, 1970" stated on copyright page. Dust jacket design by Milton Glaser. This copy with a publisher's black-and-white publicity photo of Wolfe laid in.

Only tiny bit of foxing to edge of cloth. A fine signed copy.
