”THE PERFECT EXPRESSION OF HIS COMIC TALENTS”: WODEHOUSE’ FIRST JEEVES AND WOOSTER BOOK, MY MAN JEEVES

WODEHOUSE, P. G. My Man Jeeves. London: George Newnes, [1920]. Small octavo (4-1/2 by 7 inches), modern full orange morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition, second issue, of Wodehouse’s first Jeeves and Wooster book, issued only one year after the first, featuring his beloved comic characters Jeeves and Wooster in four of the eight short stories, handsomely bound in full morocco by Asprey.

“P.G. Wodehouse had a cultivated aptitude for devising hilarious incidents of controlled incongruity as well as a talent for creating comic characters. These abilities, along with a genius for antic dialogue, lifted him into the ranks of the great humorists… ‘The first thing to remark about Mr. Wodehouse’s art is its universality,’ Evelyn Waugh once observed… Two characters among the hundreds developed by Wodehouse are indelibly associated with his name—Bertie Wooster of the Drones Club and Jeeves. ‘In these two characters… Wodehouse discovered the perfect expression of his comic talents,’ according to Voorhees’ P.G. Wodehouse” (New York Times). Second issue, with printers Hazell, Watson and Viney. With Jeeves and Wooster featured in four of the eight short stories. One rear leaf of advertisements. McIlvaine A22(2). Jasen 23.

A fine copy, handsomely bound.
