"BEST WISHES OF THE AUTHOR": FIRST EDITION OF BUTCHER'S CROSSING, INSCRIBED BY JOHN WILLIAMS IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION

WILLIAMS, John. Butcher's Crossing. New York: Macmillan, 1960. Octavo, original red and gray cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Williams' scarce second novel, inscribed in the year of publication: "March 14, 1960. To Martin, from Margurite. Best wishes of the author, John Williams."

Williams' novel vividly depicts the harsh frontier life of a buffalo hunter in 1870s Kansas. Williams wrote this novel while Director of the Creative Writing program at the University of Denver; he would go on to write Stoner (1965) and the National Book Award-winning Augustus (1972).

Book fine, with usual mild toning to interior. Price-clipped dust jacket near-fine, with only slightest soiling and single closed tear. A handsome inscribed copy.
