Illustrated History of Los Angeles County

WITH LOVELY FOLIO PHOTOGRAVURES OF EARLY LOS ANGELES AND SURROUNDING SCENERY AND PORTRAITS OF PIONEERS

(WARNER, J.J., et al.). An Illustrated History of Los Angeles County, California. Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, 1889. Thick folio (10 by 12 inches), publisher's full brown pebbled morocco gilt, gilt vignette title to front cover, raised bands, patterned endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition, superbly illustrated with eight full-page photographic plates of early views of Los Angeles and the surrounding landscape, and numerous steel-engraved portraits of notable pioneering Angelenos.

This is a detailed history of Los Angeles at the time the "Boom of the Eighties" was turning the land from sleepy cattle country to a burgeoning cluster of orchards, aqueducts and neighborhoods. Contains many biographical sketches of pioneers and developers, as well as a chapter on California "bandido" Tiburcio Vásquez. Adams, Six-Guns 1364. Rocq 2650.

Occasional marginal foxing, a bit of rubbing to corners and front joint. A very nice copy in the publisher's morocco.
