FIRST JESSE EDITION OF THE COMPLETE ANGLER, 1856, WITH SEVEN THOMAS BEWICK WOOD-ENGRAVINGS

WALTON, Izaak; COTTON, Charles. The Complete Angler. London: Henry G. Bohn, 1856. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter black morocco, gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

First Jesse edition, with 26 steel-engraved plates and 207 in-text wood-engravings (seven by Thomas Bewick and one by George Cruikshank). A handsomely bound copy.

Perhaps the single best-known work in English on fishing, The Complete Angler is "a 'piscatorial classic'… read and loved by countless people who have never encountered fish except at a table" (Sampson, 385). First published in 1653, The Complete Angler has been described as "the best pastoral in the English language" (Starkman & Read, 118-19). This is the first edition to be edited by Edward Jesse, well-known writer on natural history and key member of the Walton and Cotton Club. It contains seven contributions by famous wood-engraver Thomas Bewick (four appearing here for the first time), and one, "A Disappointment," by George Cruikshank (page 206). While the binding states "extra plates," this copy is not extra-illustrated. It is complete with all the plates and wood-engravings called for in the contents pages. Oliver 68. Coigney 71. Westwood & Satchell, 232. Starkman & Read, 111. Hugo 5439.

A handsome illustrated volume in fine condition.
