Public Papers of... Harry S. Truman... 1945-53

"A PRESIDENT'S WRITTEN AND SPOKEN WORDS CAN COMMAND NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION IF HE HAS WITHIN HIM THE POWER TO ATTRACT AND HOLD THAT ATTENTION": PRESIDENT TRUMAN'S COMPLETE PUBLIC PAPERS, INSCRIBED BY TRUMAN

TRUMAN, Harry S. Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States. Harry S. Truman. Containing the Public Messages, speeches, and Statements of the President, April 12 to December 31, 1945. Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1961-66. Eight volumes. Large octavo, original gray cloth.

First editions of the complete eight volumes of Truman's Presidential messages, speeches, and statements, inscribed in Volume I by President Truman beneath the frontispiece portrait, "To: Edward John Pfeiffer, From: Harry S. Truman."

The Public Papers of Harry S. Truman was issued in a total of eight volumes, from 1961 to 1966. Clearly 1945, the volume inscribed by Truman, was a pivotal year for both Truman and the United States, as he led the nation through the end of World War II, including the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the United States' rebuilding efforts in Europe and Asia after the war, as well as the beginning of tensions with the Soviet Union that would ultimately grow into the Cold War. These volumes were all issued without dust jackets.

Near-fine condition.
