Wessex Poems and Other Verses

FIRST EDITION OF HARDY’S WESSEX POEMS AND OTHER VERSES, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES PRINTED, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

HARDY, Thomas. Wessex Poems and Other Verses. (London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1898). Octavo, modern green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers, raised bands, morocco endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut.

First edition of Hardy’s first collection of poetry, one of only 500 copies printed, with 30 illustrations by the author, beautifully bound by Asprey.

Wessex Poems marks the final emergence of Hardy’s primary interest, verse. The 30 years that remained to him were devoted to the composition of poetry, the resumption of work very dear to him which had been almost wholly laid aside, with the exigencies of novel-writing, since the decade of the 60’s. This first collection, like all the others to follow, covers a wide range of years and contains poems which antedate the earliest novels… Only 4 of the collection had been published previously. ‘The rough sketches given in illustration’ Hardy is careful to point out in his Preface, are not for the most part contemporaneous with the poems but had ‘been recently made, and, as may be surmised, are inserted for personal and local reasons rather than for their intrinsic qualities… They serve, nevertheless, as a pleasant reminder of Hardy’s architectural training and his skill as a draughtsman… Wessex Poems was published at 6s. in an edition of 500 copies during the week of 11 December 1898” (Purdy, 96-106). Webb, 33-34.

A beautiful copy in fine condition.
