"FROM THE ORACULAR ARCHIVES AND THE PARCHMENT": FIRST EDITION OF SELECTED WRITINGS, SIGNED BY DYLAN THOMAS

THOMAS, Dylan. Selected Writings of Dylan Thomas. New York: New Directions, (1946). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of a major collection of prose and poetry, signed by Dylan Thomas.

Among the poems included in Selected Writings are "I see the boys of summer in their ruin," "Fern Hill," "A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London," and "In My Craft or Sullen Art." Also included are four short stories and two chapters excerpted from Thomas' autobiographical Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog. First edition, likely second issue: with publisher's address of "333 Sixth Avenue" on copyright page instead of "500 Fifth Avenue" (New Directions moved to 333 Sixth Avenue from its earlier location of 500 Fifth Avenue after 1946 and by 1953), rose cloth binding and one-page title page; dust jacket with "333 Sixth Avenue" on bottom of rear panel and no "Lowry" on lower right front panel. While bibliographic consensus remains unsettled, likely first issue copies are found in green cloth binding, with double-page title page and earlier publisher's address of "500 Fifth Avenue" on copyright page, along with dust jacket showing "Lowry" on the right front panel, bottom of rear panel with address of "500 Fifth Avenue." Rolph B11. Maud, 12. Owner signature above Thomas' signature.

Book with light toning, mild rubbing to spine ends; slight toning, some chipping to spine head of dust jacket. An extremely good copy in unrestored dust jacket, scarce signed.
