"TO SERVE AND STRENGTHEN THE COUNTRY": FIRST EDITION OF LADY MARGARET THATCHER'S COLLECTED SPEECHES, 1997, SIGNED BY HER

THATCHER, Margaret. The Collected Speeches of Margaret Thatcher. (London): HarperCollins, (1997). Thick octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition, first printing of the "most comprehensive" collection of Lady Thatcher's speeches, spanning nearly four decades, signed by her on the title page in her characteristic blue ink.

Lady Thatcher, the United Kingdom's first woman prime minister, studied chemistry at Oxford before becoming a barrister and entering politics. She was nicknamed the "Iron Lady" for her tough stance on trade unions, privatization of government-owned companies, the Soviet Union, and the Irish Republication Army, which attempted to assassinate her in 1984. Ousted from the premiership in 1990, she remained in the House of Commons for another two years. In 1992 she was granted a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, making her a member of the House of Lords. This impressive volume contains her speeches from the "Opposition Years" (1968-78), the "First Parliament" (1979-83), the "Second Parliament" (1983-87), the "Third Parliament" (1987-90), and "After Downing Street" (1990-96). It includes her May 4, 1979 "Statement on the Doorstep of 10 Downing Street" and her "Nicholas Ridley Memorial Lecture," which she delivered in London on November 22, 1996. Edited by Robin Harris. Precedes the same year's signed limited edition (200 copies), which the publisher held back for distribution.

A fine copy.
