"THEIR'S NOT TO TO REASON WHY,/ THEIR'S NOT TO MAKE REPLY,/ THEIR'S BUT TO DO AND DIE…": THE FIRST BOOK APPEARANCE OF TENNYSON’S “CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE”: FIRST EDITION OF MAUD, 1855

TENNYSON, Alfred, Lord. Maud, and Other Poems. London: Edward Moxon, 1855. Small octavo, original green cloth.

First edition of this collection of eight poems, including Tennyson's immortal "The Charge of the Light Brigade."

Maud represents the first work in which Tennyson attempted to tell a story dramatically, and includes the first book appearance of his memorable "The Charge of the Light Brigade." The poem was written "in a few minutes, after reading the description in the Times in which occurred the phrase 'some one had blundered,' and this was the origin of the meter of the poem… For the version published in Maud and Other Poems (1855) Tennyson excised the 'some one had blundered' line at the insistence of 'some friends of excellent critical judgment'… Tennyson quickly decided he himself had blundered by being so misguided. John Ruskin, by then gaining prominence as a literary critic, urged the line's reinstatement… 'Some one had blundered' thus regained its rightful place as the poem's keynote" (Hagen, Tennyson and His Publishers, 91-93). Maud was the first Tennyson title published since he was named Poet Laureate, and followed on the success of In Memoriam five years earlier. Publisher Edward Moxon ordered 10,000 copies printed, and brisk sales demanded a second edition before the end of the year. With eight pages of advertisements dated August, 1855 inserted at front, and one leaf of publisher's advertisements at rear. Wise, 58. Tinker 2080. Owner signature.

Only occasional faint foxing, a bit of staining to cloth, spine sunned. An extremely good copy.
