"THE PROGRESS OF BRAZIL FROM ITS FEEBLE BEGINNINGS, TO THE IMPORTANCE WHICH IT NOW POSSESSES"

SOUTHEY, Robert. History of Brazil. London: Longman, Hurst, Reese, Orme, and Brown, 1822, 1817, 1819. Three volumes. Quarto, contemporary full tan calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, tan and brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges.

Mixed first and second edition set of Southey's early and influential history of Brazil, with large engraved folding map.

As one of the earliest histories of Brazil, this work remained for decades the standard work on the subject. Best known as a Romantic poet (and Poet Laureate of England from 1813 to 1843), Southey was also an accomplished scholar of Spanish and Portuguese; this 3-volume history was originally intended to be part of a larger project on the history of the Portuguese empire that was never finished (this work is complete in itself). Volume I is second edition, the only volume to be republished; Volumes II and III are first editions, re-issued with the second edition. Sabin 88552. Early owner signatures.

Map fine, text with scattered light foxing; contemporary calf very handsome.
