THE GOLDEN COCKEREL POEMS & SONNETS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SPECIALLY BOUND IN MOROCCO-GILT BY HISCOX

(SHAKESPEARE, William) JONES, Gwyn, editor. The Poems & Sonnets. (London): Golden Cockerel Press, 1960. Tall quarto (8 by 11-1/2 inches), original burgundy morocco gilt, raised bands, top edge gilt. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase.

Golden Cockerel Press edition, number 51 of 100 copies specially bound in morocco-gilt by Hiscox (out of a total edition of 470 copies), designed by Christopher Sandford for Golden Cockerel and on paper hand-made by Barcham Green, with composition and printing executed at the Chiswick Press.

“After Nonesuch, the most important of the private presses which grew up between the wars was the Golden Cockerel Press” (Ransom, 191). In 1933, the Press passed from the hands of wood-engraver Robert Gibbings (who greatly advanced the Press’ reputation for “fine editions of books of established worth”) to those of Chistopher Sandford, director of the Chiswick Press and founder of the Boar’s Head Press. To save the Golden Cockerel from bankruptcy, Sandford arranged to use the Chiswick plant for the production of Golden Cockerel books. The Chiswick Press had become famous for its revival of fine printing in England, when, in 1844, it brought Caslon type back into use. From its founding in 1811, the Press maintained the earlier traditions of Aldus, Baskerville, and Janson, despite operating within the confines of a commercial environment. Contemporary owner gift inscription and offsetting from pressed gift nosegay.

Interior fine, binding generally quite lovely with only slightest toning and a few faint spots to spine. A very nearly fine copy.
