Complete Works of William Shakespeare

“SHAPED AT LEAST TWO GENERATIONS’ UNDERSTANDING”: ROCKWELL KENT’S ILLUSTRATED SHAKESPEARE, SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION

(KENT, Rockwell) SHAKESPEARE, William. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Garden City: Doubleday, Doran (Country Life Press), 1936. Two volumes. Folio, original blue cloth, vellum spine labels, top edges gilt, uncut. Housed in custom clamshell box.

Signed limited first edition of this handsomely illustrated Shakespeare, number 265 of only 750 copies, signed by the artist Rockwell Kent.

This is the Country Life Press printing, designed by A.P. Tedesco, of the Cambridge Shakespearian text as edited by William Aldis Wright, including the Temple notes, with a preface by Christopher Morley. Rockwell Kent’s 40 dramatic full-page illustrations, including two two-color frontispieces, “have, like the Moby Dick images, shaped at least two generations’ understanding of the characters portrayed” (Stanley 48). “The graphic art tradition in which Kent worked was not that of the Post-Impressionist or abstract International style, but rather an older and somewhat English style. Hogarth, Blake, Constable, the Pre-Raphaelites, and the British illustrators were his artistic antecedents. His work is most frequently identified with that of the American Social Realists and the great muralists of the 1920s and 1930s” (Plattsburgh State Art Museum). Without original slipcase.

Only occasional stray spots of foxing (much less than usual). An about-fine copy of a lovely production.
