1799 JOHNSON AND STEEVENS’ PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, 23 VOLUMES IN CONTEMPORARY BOARDS, “ENRICHED BY SIXTY ADDED PLATES”

SHAKESPEARE, William. The Plays of William Shakspeare. Basil: J.J. Tourneisen, 1799-1802. Twenty-three volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter dark brown sheep, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red calf spine labels, marbled boards.

Samuel Johnson and George Steevens’ celebrated edition of Shakespeare’s plays, beautifully printed and illustrated with 62 full-page plates and 11 in-text illustrations, engraved by Heath after Romney, Reynolds, Stothard, Fuseli and Hamilton, among others.

First published in 1773, Johnson and Steevens’ edition of Shakespeare’s plays was “considered the best edition that had appeared up to that time, and was long regarded as the standard, the illustrative quotations from the works of Shakespeare’s contemporaries being of especial value” (Grolier, Shakespeare’s Plays, 19-20). This is a reprint of Isaac Reed’s edition of 1793. “Some sets are enriched by sixty added plates,” including this set (Jaggard, 508). Lowndes, 2263. Early owner signature in each volume.

Scattered light foxing throughout. Some light rubbing to contemporary bindings, a few joints a bit tender. An exceptional set with an exceptional collection of engravings after some of England’s most renowned artists.
