Brundibar

“THOUGH I GO, I WON’T GO FAR…”: FIRST EDITION OF BRUNDIBAR, SIGNED BY TONY KUSHNER AND MAURICE SENDAK

KUSHNER, Tony and SENDAK, Maurice. Brundibar. [New York]: (Hyperion, 2003). Oblong quarto, original brown cloth, patterned endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of this children’s Holocaust allegory, signed on the half title by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and Caldecott-winning illustrator Maurice Sendak.

A chilling allegory, based on the Czech opera Brundibar by Adolf Hoffmeister and Hans Krása. The original opera was performed 55 times by Jewish children in front of visiting dignitaries and Red Cross officials at Terezín, a concentration camp. After the final performance, all of the children were killed and both Hoffmeister and Krása perished at Auschwitz. “The story, though grim indeed, should become essential reading… The signal moments of haunting beauty in this book are mostly tucked away in the corners: the dozens of children’s faces peopling every crowd scene. It is in the faces of these unnamed children that Brundibar burns us to the heart and clinches its argument” (New York Times).

A fine signed copy.
