YOU DON’T LOOK 35, CHARLIE BROWN!, WARMLY INSCRIBED BY SCHULZ TO COMIC ARTIST ZACK MOSLEY, CREATOR OF "SMILIN' JACK"

SCHULZ, Charles M. You Don't Look 35, Charlie Brown! New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, (1985). Quarto, original half red cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this collection of autobiographical reminiscences, many of which inspired certain of the Peanuts comic strips, warmly inscribed by Schulz to fellow comic artist Zack Mosley, creator of "Smilin' Jack," using his nickname "Sparky": "To Betty & Zack with friendship & good memories—Sparky."

Issued to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Peanuts, this commemorative work features numerous comic strips, accompanied by Schultz' recollections, most of which served as inspiration for one or another episode. This book is inscribed to Zack Mosley (and his wife, Betty) who wrote the classic aviation comic "Smilin' Jack." First published in the 1930s, the comic quickly caught on and incorporated action-filled plots involving espionage and romance. Universal Studios even produced a serial of "Smilin' Jack" during the war years. Schulz has signed here as "Sparky." "Sparky" was Schulz' childhood nickname, which "all who were close to him called him… An uncle gave him the nickname 'Sparky' after the comic strip Barney Google wherein was a racehorse named Spark-Plug. The name fitted Schulz to a 'T" (Bill Melendez).

A fine inscribed copy with a wonderful comics provenance.
