Naples and the Campagna Felice

FIRST EDITION OF NAPLES AND THE CAMPAGNA FELICE, WITH HAND-COLORED ROWLANDSON PLATES, HANDSOMELY BOUND—THE HOE COPY

(ITALY) (ROWLANDSON, Thomas) [ENGELBACH, Lewis]. Naples and the Campagna Felice. In a Series of Letters, Addressed to a Friend in England, in 1802. London: R. Ackermann, 1815. Large octavo, 19th-century three-quarter straight-grain navy morocco gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, uncut.

First edition of this delightfully illustrated book about Southern Italy during the early 19th century, with engraved title page, two maps (one folding), and 15 aquatint plates (nine of which are by Thomas Rowlandson), all finely hand-colored. A lovely, large, uncut copy from the library of esteemed collector Robert Hoe, with his bookplate, as well as that of respected New York bibliophile Charles C. Auchincloss.

Rowlandson’s “talent for exuberant and flowing lines had affinities with the French Rococo of Fragonard, but his rollicking humour and delicate tonal effects were distinctively English… His repertory of themes was inexhaustible and his oeuvre has been termed the English equivalent of Balzac’s Comédie humaine… His overall standard is remarkably high” (Chilvers, et al., 436). “No graphic artist has surpassed Rowlandson in presenting the patterned activity of day-to-day communal existence” (Ray, 26). The text of this work was originally published in Repository of the Arts between 1809 and 1813 under the title, “Letters from Italy”; of the illustrations, only the folding map was previously published. Abbey Travel 166. Tooley 419. Library of Robert Hoe, Anderson Auction Company, May 1, 1911, lot 2839 (“a tall copy”). Bookplates, of Robert Hoe, Charles C. Auchincloss, and one other. Description from the Auchincloss sale of 1961 laid in.

Fine condition. A lovely copy, with distinguished provenance.
