“WITH LOVE FROM GRANDMÈRE (ELEANOR ROOSEVELT)”: EXCEPTIONAL PRESENTATION/ASSOCIATION FIRST EDITION OF ON MY OWN, INSCRIBED IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT TO HER GRANDSON, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT III

ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. On My Own. New York: Harper & Brothers, (1958). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, early printing, an exceedingly scarce presentation/association copy inscribed on the half title at Christmas in the year of publication by the First Lady to her grandson, Franklin D. Roosevelt III, “For Franklin III, with love from Grandmère (Eleanor Roosevelt ), Xmas 1958.”

With On My Own, Eleanor Roosevelt's last book of autobiography before her death in 1962 at the age of 78, she movingly chronicles her active life after the death of her husband in 1945. This wonderful presentation copy is inscribed by her to economist Franklin D. Roosevelt III, who was the son of FDR, Jr. and Ethel du Pont Roosevelt. He played a key role in the creation of New York's Eleanor Roosevelt Monument, the nation's first public statue of a president's wife, which was dedicated in 1996. First edition, early printing with "K-H" on copyright page. Featuring 16 pages of photographic illustrations. Edens B24. Bookplate of Robert Durrie Barton, nephew of Republican Congressman Bruce Barton, who was an outspoken critic of FDR and represented Manhattan's Silk Stocking district from 1937-41 as he campaigned to "repeal a useless law a week"—predicting FDR's 1940 election would mean war.

Book fine; slight chipping, soiling, trace of a small star to lightly faded spine of extremely good dust jacket.
