INSCRIBED BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT: FIRST EDITION OF INDIA AND THE AWAKENING EAST

ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. India and the Awakening East. New York: Harper & Brothers, (1953). Octavo, original half black paper boards, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of the First Lady’s account of her travels through the Middle East and India, inscribed on the half title: "Inscribed for —— & Harry Tafel with good wishes Eleanor Roosevelt," in scarce original dust jacket.

The beloved First Lady, social reformer and diplomat, writes of her travels to India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Israel, all in her service as an "ambassador of democracy." First edition, with code "F-C" on copyright page indicating publication in June 1953. Illustrated with 32 pages of black-and-white photographs.

Book nearly fine, with minor foxing to endpapers and only faintest soiling to binding. Price-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with a few spots of foxing to flaps, light wear to extremities, and toning to spine. An attractive signed copy.
