Story of Miss Moppet

FIRST EDITION OF POTTER’S STORY OF MISS MOPPET, IN SCARCE WALLET FORM

POTTER, Beatrix. The Story of Miss Moppet. London and New York: Frederick Warne, (1906). 16mo, original red cloth wallet, mounted cover illustration. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition, first issue, preceding the book form, with 14 illustrations and 14 “pages” of text in one long accordion folder with variant red linen backing.

During 1906 Potter wrote and illustrated two shorter, simpler books for the very young, originally published that year in the form of folding panoramic sheets tucked into a wallet; these were The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit and The Story of Miss Moppet” (Carpenter & Prichard, 422). This delightful cat-and-mouse tale is beautifully illustrated in a series of scenes that folds out to several feet in length. Unfortunately, “the shops sensibly refused to stock [accordion books] because they got unrolled and [were] so bad to fold up again” (Linder, 183). As a result, these books went out of print after the first two printings. They were not reissued until 1916, and then in book form only. First issue, with “London & New York” on rear of wallet. Variant red cloth backing, instead of the usual gray, with purple endpapers, instead of the usual gray. Quinby 11. Linder, 426.

Interior fine. Wallet intact, including tab and slot, with only minor rubbing and soiling. A near-fine copy of a scarce and fragile title.
