Poetical Works of Alexander Pope

“A COUPLET STYLE MORE REFINED AND MUSICAL THAN ANY BEFORE”: SPLENDID EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED SET OF POPE’S POETICAL WORKS, THE HOE COPY, IN RICH BEDFORD BINDING

POPE, Alexander. The Poetical Works. London: F.J. Du Roveray, 1804. Six volumes in four. Royal octavo, late 19th-century full red crushed morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Extra-illustrated edition of Pope’s poetical works, one of only 50 copies on large paper, with the original 22 engravings, most in three states, and 285 additional illustrations, including numerous portraits, scenes and views from the poems. Beautifully bound by Bedford.

“Like Dryden, much of Pope’s poetry, and all of his major poems, are inextricably linked to his mastery of the heroic couplet… In Pope’s hands [the couplet] could move seamlessly from pastoral to satire to epic or moral epistle and be consistently effective” (Ian Lancashire). Scholars go so far as to praise Pope’s early Pastorals for introducing “a couplet style more refined and musical than any before in English versification” (DLB). This Roveray edition of Pope’s poetry is based upon the text of William Warburton, to whom Pope bequeathed the copyright and the editorship of his works. In addition to the 22 plates published with this edition (mostly after Stothard and represented in either two or three states: preliminary etching, proof before letters, and mounted proof on India paper), this extra-illustrated copy contains 57 portraits of Pope (including two original drawings), 132 portraits of individuals mentioned in the texts, 86 scenes from the poems and ten landscape views. Of special interest are an engraving of St. Cecilia and another of the Three Graces by Bartolozzi, a hand-colored aquatint portrait of Mahomet by G.P. Harding, “Belinda” and “Adam and Eve” by Henry Fuseli and a series of illustrations of the poems by Clément-Pierre Marillier, in two states. Bookplates of Robert Hoe (together with his penciled notes) and of Elton Linwood Puffer.

A splendid production in fine condition, exquisitely bound.
