"IN THE 19TH CENTURY, ONLY JEFFERSON, JACKSON AND LINCOLN WOULD WIELD THE POWER OF THE OFFICE OF CHIEF MAGISTRATE AS EFFECTIVELY": EXECUTIVE DOCUMENTS, 1834-35, FROM THE LIBRARY OF AMERICA'S 11TH PRESIDENT, JAMES K. POLK, SIGNED BY HIM

(POLK, James K.) U.S. CONGRESS. Executive Documents 23rd Congress, 2nd Session, 1834-35. [Washington: Government Printing Office, 1834-35]. Thick octavo, modern half calf, old red morocco spine label retained.

Government printing of the Executive Documents related to legislation before the Second Session of Congress from December 1, 1834, to March 3, 1835—from the library of President James K. Polk, consistently ranked "in or near the top ten presidents" by historians, signed by him on the first leaf.

Polk is consistently ranked "in or near the top ten presidents" by historians (Byrnes, 93). He "boldly exerted the influence of the presidency… increased the landmass of the country by a third, creating a continental nation that reached from ocean to ocean… and created an independent Treasury that was viable for more than 60 years. In the 19th century, only Jefferson, Jackson and Lincoln would wield the power of the office of chief magistrate as effectively" (Seigenthaler, James K. Polk, 1-3). Representing Tennessee, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1825, where he "wielded his influence through committee reports, as in the matter of government sale of its bank stock," and as Speaker of the House from 1835 to 1839 (ANB). The Second Session of Congress sat from December 1, 1834 to March 3, 1835. This book is a compilation of correspondence from various government agencies to the Congress used to supplement information necessary for understanding the legislation set before the House, indexed at the beginning. On December 7th, 1835 Polk became Speaker of the House and served in that position until 1839; he was elected President in 1845. With folding table and engraved folding map. Tennessee State Library ink stamp in lower margin of page 65.

Some foxing and embrowning to text. Attractive binding fine. An exceptional presidential association.
