BEAUTIFUL FIRST EDITION OF WILLY POGANY'S MOTHER GOOSE, SIGNED BY HIM

POGANY, Willy. Mother Goose. New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, (1928). Quarto, original gilt-stamped pictorial blue cloth, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt.

First trade edition of this striking Art Deco Mother Goose, copiously illustrated with over 140 scenes from the text and over 60 color plates, signed on the half title by Willy Pogany.

Hungarian-born Willy Pogány "specialized in gift book embellishment both before and after the First World War" (Harthan, 242). "Arriving in New York City in 1914 from England, Pogany soon achieved renown as a designer of stage sets for the Metropolitan Opera and for Broadway productions. His subsequent achievements included murals for theaters, hotels and business and institutional buildings; book illustration; art direction for Hollywood motion pictures; architectural designs; sculpture; and portraiture" (Columbia Encyclopedia). Pogany's "influences were the Oriental artists and illuminated books" (Reed, 105). A prolific artist, Pogany produced illustrations for more than 150 books in his lifetime, including many classics of children's literature such as Mother Goose. Published the same year as a signed/limited edition of 500 copies. Without very rare dust jacket.

A beautiful, bright copy in fine condition.
