GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON JR.'S PERSONAL COPY OF GENERAL HAGOOD'S MEMOIR OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR, THRICE SIGNED BY PATTON

(PATTON, George S.) HAGOOD, Johnson. The Services of Supply. A Memoir of the Great War. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1927. Octavo, original navy cloth. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box.

First edition of General Johnson Hagood's memoir of the Great War—a memorable association copy belonging to General George S. Patton Jr., signed by him on the front cover, the spine, and signed and dated "Nov 1928" by him on the front flyleaf.

"General George S. Patton Jr. has earned a place in the pantheon of authentic American heroes…. [Yet] his great success on the battlefield did not come about by chance…. He read voraciously… During the interwar years Patton consulted an eclectic list of the famous and the lesser known, ranging from Napoleon and Clausewitz to du Picq, Jomini, Cromwell, Xenophon and Frederick the Great" (D'Este, Patton, 3-4, 317-18). No other military leader wrote so frequently in his letters or diary what he was reading, and no leader's library was so well-documented since Napoleon's. Patton's library, which was almost entirely inherited by his son, Major General George Patton III, was given to West Point, with just a small portion of books, including these volumes, inherited by other descendants or friends. This rare association copy of General Hagood's The Services of Supply: A Memoir of the Great War—Patton's own copy from that interwar period—is thrice signed by him, as was his custom: on the front cover, on the spine ("Patton"), and on the front flyleaf, which he has also dated "Nov 1928." (The signatures in blue ink on the navy blue cloth are difficult to detect.) General Hagood, originally commissioned in the artillery, served in France in World War I, where he created the important Services of Supply or "SOS" branch of the Army. Without original dust jacket. This volume acquired directly from the Patton family.

A bit of faint foxing to text, a few minor scuffs to cloth. Patton's interior ownership signature and date bold and fine. An excellent association copy of this military memoir.
