“ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR ATHLETES”: THE TURNING POINT, SIGNED ON A BOOKPLATE BY ARNOLD PALMER

(PALMER, Arnold). The Turning Point. (Chattanooga, Tennessee: ProGroup, 1983). Small quarto, original publisher's full black leatherette gilt; pp. 48.

Limited first edition of this illustrated tribute to Palmer’s victory in the 54th Amateur Championship of the USGA, a turning point in his career, signed on a bookplate by Arnold Palmer.

"One of the world's most popular athletes… Arnold Palmer made golf accessible to the common man, and his legions of fans became known as Arnie's Army" (New York Times). "Seven of his victories came in what the golfing world considers the four major professional championships. He won the Masters Tournament four times, in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964; the U.S. Open in spectacular fashion in 1960 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver and the British Open in 1961 and 1962…. Arnie's springboard to professional fame and fortune was his victory in the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1954. He turned professional a few months later" (USGA). This handsome inscribed volume pays tribute that 1954 Championship with detailed coverage of the opening rounds, the quarter final, the "seesaw battle" between Palmer and Ed Meister in "the longest semi-final match in the 54-year history of the U.S. Amateur," and the final round of 36 holes in "a gritty, come-from-behind victory over Robert Sweeney." Limited first edition with "no limitation cited" (Donovan & Murdoch 75410). Featuring 25 black-and-white photogravures, many full page, and a double-page map of the Country Club of Detroit. As issued without dust jacket.
