OVID’S ART OF LOVE, SIGNED AND ILLUSTRATED BY ARISTIDE MAILLOL, WITH 12 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS AND 15 ORIGINAL WOODCUTS

(MAILLOL, Aristide) OVID. L'Art d'Aimer. (Lausanne: Les Frères Gonin), 1935. Folio (11-1/2 by 15-1/2 inches), signatures loose as issued in original printed paper wrappers, original glassine, original vellum-spined portfolio and original vellum-edged slipcase.

Signed limited edition of this French prose translation of Ovid’s love poetry, illustrated with 15 original in-text woodcuts and 12 full-page original lithographs—six printed in sanguine—by renowned artist and sculptor Aristide Maillol. This copy number 145 of only 225 copies signed in pencil by Maillol on the limitation page (from a total edition of 275).

"These poems had a momentous influence on later European civilization. It was not only Chaucer who read Ovid's love poetry; every educated person with the slightest interest in the subject did so" (Paul Brians). "The sculpturesque nudes of Maillol's lithographs are closely related in style and spirit to his monumental carved figures" (The Artist and the Book 174).

Spotting to boards of portfolio and slipcase, faint darkening to portfolio spine; book, glassine and original wrappers fine. A lovely illustrated volume, signed by Maillol.
