"CHOP SUEY WITH DANCING; CHOP SUEY WITHOUT DANCING": VANITY FAIR'S INTIMATE GUIDE TO NEW YORK AFTER DARK, IN RARE DUST JACKET

(NEW YORK CITY) SHAW, Charles G. Nightlife: Vanity Fair's Intimate Guide to New York after Dark. New York: John Day, (1931). Octavo, original black pictorial cloth, mounted cover illustration, decorative endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of this illustrated guide to the "city that never sleeps," with numerous line vignettes by Raymond Bret-Koch, in wonderful pictorial binding with scarce original dust jacket.

Shaw and his employer Vanity Fair highlight New York's "halls of terpsichore, cabarets, night clubs, roof gardens, road houses, and dancing grill rooms—no museums, night schools, or galleries." Faint pencil signature to front free endpaper.

Book fine, scarce unrestored price-clipped dust jacket with tiny chip to spine head and a few other minor snags, near-fine. A lovely copy.
